Northpointe Apartment Homes – Service Goals

Our goals are to empower residents and support self sufficiency by providing supportive services. Programs are offered at no cost to our residents. Listed below are some of the services provided, including but not limited to:

1. Service Coordinator:
Assumes responsibility for service management function within Northpointe Apartment homes.
Manages the Northpointe Resource Center. Develops and implements youth and adult programming.

2. Resource Center:
Fitness center, a large community room and an on-site computer lab (20 computers).
The computer lab is a big resource for the residents at Northpointe and has been designated a HUD Neighborhood Network Center. Its emphasis is computer access and literacy to all youth and adult residents. Computer education and homework assistance classes are provided five days a week. Recently adult computer lab hours have started and Black Men of Los Angeles is implementing a job training program.

3. Neighborhood Networks
HUD created Neighborhood Networks in 1995 to encourage property owners to establish multi-service community learning centers in HUD insured and assisted properties. Neighborhood Networks centers help:
Improve computer access.
Advance literacy.
Prepare residents to take advantage of employment opportunities.
Provide access to healthcare information and other social services.

4. Volunteer Program:
The volunteer program came to fruition in March 2005. There are approximately 20 volunteers who are helping to fulfill part of our mission of providing quality, integrated services and activities for the residents living at Northpointe. Many of these volunteers are residents themselves whom want to make a change in their own community.

5. Summer Programming (2005):

Extensive summer classes and programs are provided every summer at Northpointe Apartments. Providing safety, structure, supervision, and curriculum to the youth living at Northpointe is an important part of our mission.
The summer programs offered this summer were:
Swimming class
Fitness class
Structured recreation
Literacy class for children 4yrs – 6yrs old
Cooking class
Dance class
Arts and Crafts class
Nasa JPL program – an extension of 12 week program facilitated during the winter time
Elevate Your Game Mentoring Program – continuation of on going mentor program
Elevate Your Game has implemented a summer Internship Program for 10-15 teens (off-site at local businesses)
Sign Language Instruction
Youth Venture program empowers young people to create and launch their own enterprises, and through these enterprises called ventures, to take greater responsibility for their lives and communities. This will be a 2 month program.
Junior Achievement program uses hands-on experiences to help young people understand the economics of life. In partnership with business and educators, Junior Achievement brings the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential. This program will extend through the summer and will focus on aspects of architecture and community development.
In addition to the youth programs, Concerned Black Men of Los Angeles will be teaching a Microsoft Certification Class to the adult residents in August

6. Helpline Youth & Adult Counseling:
This Mental Health Agency provides on-site weekly support groups for Northpointe youth and parents. The group session focus on multiple mental health issues such as anger management, building self esteem, making positive choices.
In addition a counselor will provide an eight week financial education program for teens and adults.
We look forward to future programming with Helpline: Substance abuse education, gang intervention, domestic violence education and a mentor program for Northpointe youth who have a parent whom is incarcerated.

7. The Imagine Mars Program:

This is a pilot program (Project Beta Test) developed by JPL-NASA. The Imagine Mars activity series is being developed specifically for the Northpointe HUD Neighborhood Network. Once it is executed, and evaluated, it is JPL- NASA’s objective to share the activity with other HUD Neighborhood Networks across the country. The finished activity set will be posted on the Imagine Mars website and presented at the June HUD conference in Florida. The 12-week on-site youth empowerment program was created by the educational department at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The program has been a collaborative effort between NASA, HUD, and the Northpointe Resource Center staff. The goal of the program has been to empower the youth and raise their self esteem by introducing them to ideas, technological resources, and leaders of the community. View the Videos

9. Concerned Black Men of Los Angeles:

Concerned Black Men of Los Angeles are teaching a weekly Microsoft Certification Class to the adult residents living at Northpointe.

10. Open Studio:

Open Studios is an organization that assist other organizations in seting up recording studios on the computer systems within the organization. Stanford University provides the donated software.
The donated resources include:
Free recording services for the Northpointe residents
Multi-media resources for the resources center
Technology resources

11. Long Beach Blast:

(Better Learning After School Today) Long Beach Blast’s mission is to improve learning in after school programs through collaboration.

Blast does the following:
Prepares volunteers to work with children at-risk for school failure
Convenes the community around after school issues
Coordinates after school staff training opportunities
Brings resources to after school programs

12. Princeton Review:
This College Preparatory Agency provides weekly SAT Preparatory Classes to the High School aged youth living at Northpointe. This agency has donated their staff and time to provide these classes at little or no cost to the residents.

13. The Montesorri on-site Preschool:
This Preschool program receives funding through the state of California and is little or no costs to qualified parents. Services are run by experienced Case Managers/Child Care workers with a back ground in child development.

14. Financial classes to develop residents’ money management skills (checking and saving accounts), helping them manage and maintain their income, thereby ensuring financial stability.
Credit and financial counseling
Debt and housing counseling
Training and education on the wise use of credit
Development of finance knowledge
Las Palmas and the Northpointe Service Coordinator are continuously identifying ways to supplement programming beyond the resources provided through the operating budget. Currently, Las Palmas has applied for two grants that would enable us to provide additional services at the resource center.
