SUMMERCREST APARTMENTS – NATIONAL CITY, CA
Our goals are to empower residents and support self sufficiency by providing supportive services. Programs are offered at no cost to our residents. Listed below are some of the services provided, including but not limited to:
1. After School Programs:
- Computer Classes
- Classes are taught twice a week to all interested residents at the on-site computer center.
- Computer education begins with the computer instructor assessing the skill level of each participant. The goal of computer education is to empower the families and support increased education and independence.
- Extensive summer programs have been organized for the kids living at Summercrest. The children and teens have the opportunity to be involved in recreation and sports, arts and crafts, group activities and computer classes. In addition, for the third year in a row, the youth enjoy a free lunch every day. This lunch program is funded through the state and administered through city agencies.
2. Youth Drug and Alcohol After School Program:
- We have been awarded The Critical Hours Grant. The program provides a variety of after school programs and activities for youth. The programs are provided in a safe, drug and alcohol free environment where the youth may feel free to explore new areas of interest and activities during the “critical hours” 2:00- 5:00p.m.
- The Critical Hour Program components:
- Tutoring or homework assistance is provided, life skills education, ATOD education and other health groups.
- Improved or sustained school performance
- Increased or refreshed their knowledge of coping strategies as related to alcohol, drugs and gangs.
- Reduction of at-risk behavior or sustained levels of adverse contact with the juvenile justice system.
- Increased or refresh knowledge of positive health habits
3. Service Coordination:
- A service coordinator works full time at Summercrest Apartments. Her role is to help residents obtain needed supportive services from the community. Specifically, the Service Coordinator implements and supervises supportive services, education and health programs.
- Our second Service Coordinator was hired in May 2005. She has her Masters degree in Gerontology and has been working in the field of aging for many years. In addition, she is bilingual (English and Spanish). Not only is she supporting service development, but is also working closely with the Hispanic residents at Summercrest. Many of these residents speak little English and now have an experienced Coordinator to help them with their needs.
4. Neighborhood Networks
- Neighborhood Networks centers help:
- Improve computer access.
- Advance literacy.
- Prepare residents to take advantage of employment opportunities.
- Provide access to healthcare information and other social services.
- Neighborhood Networks centers are putting the power of technology in the hands of people. No two Neighborhood Networks centers are alike.
